More than 3,000 freshmen will arrive at Appalachian State University Friday, Aug. 17, for the 2012-13 academic year. Traffic in town may be more congested at times as a result.

The new students will move into their campus residence halls from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. Returning students will move in Saturday, Aug. 18. Classes begin Aug. 21.

In addition to the new freshmen, Appalachian will have about 950 transfer students arriving this fall, which will bring total enrollment well over 17,000, including both undergraduate and graduate students.

The university has a series of Welcome Week activities planned for students, including a Black and Gold Ceremony to officially welcome freshmen and transfers to the Appalachian Family, DJ dance, outdoor movie night, introductions to student life and other events.
