Last Updated on May 21, 2018 5:33 pm

The National Weather Service in BLACKSBURG has issued a

* Flood Advisory for Watauga County until 11:30 pm Monday.

* At 525 PM EDT, earlier slow moving thunderstorms producing an
additional 1-2 inches of rain have contributed to rises on several
rivers and streams in the western and central portions of Watauga
County. The gage on the Watauga River at Sugar Grove has risen
above minor flood stage of 6.0 feet, which floods Watauga River
Road at that stage. Heavy rain has also led to debris flows on the
900 block of Silverstone Road and on Old Route 421 in Zionville.
Moderate rain now over Avery County will lead to additional areas
of minor flooding.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include…
Boone…
Blowing Rock…
Beech Mountain…
Foscoe…
and Sugar Grove.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are
potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded
roads. Find an alternate route.

When it is safe to do so, please send your reports of flooding,
including mudslides or flooded roads, to the National Weather Service
by calling toll free at 1…8 6 6…2 1 5…4 3 2 4. Reports and
pictures can also be shared on the National Weather Service
Blacksburg Facebook page and on Twitter.
